Hotspot questions, also known as Click-on-Target questions, allow you to visualize student comprehension of an image.
Note: Hotspot questions are in beta as of 08/01/2026. If you run into any issues using Hotspot questions, just email help@squarecap.com.
To create a Hotspot question, select the Hotspot option from the question types dropdown:
Hotspot questions require you to upload an image, which you can do by dragging and dropping an image into the upload box, or by clicking Browse Files and selecting an image.
Once the image has been uploaded, simply click on the image to create a "Correct" Zone:
You can resize the zone by clicking the handle on the right edge of the zone, or click and drag to create and resize the zone in a single action. You can also add multiple zones by clicking again.
In class, your students will be able to tap or click on the image to submit their response:
The orange dot denotes a saved submission.
At any time, you can click "Show Heatmap" to visualize where students are clicking:
After class, students will receive correctness credit if they clicked anywhere within a correct zone.
